Quantum’s 2025-2026 Undergraduate Admissions Insights

Congratulations to our class of 2026 students on their stellar acceptances into schools such as MIT, Stanford, Yale, UC Berkeley, Cambridge, and Oxford!

Now that all results for this year have been released, here are a few trends we have identified as professionals that can help you get into your dream school.

1. More applications than ever

The number of applications every year has only increased and this has caused a number of consequences for students looking to apply to top universities. Admissions offices are stretched more than ever, and admissions officers have less time than ever to make their decision regarding prospective students. Admissions officers at top universities have reported taking only 1-3 minutes to read a profile before deciding if the student deserves a place at their university. Admissions officers are now more exacting than ever and aspects of the application like the letter of recommendation are more important than ever. Students should choose their recommenders carefully and there needs to be a clear distinction between a “good” letter of recommendation and a useful letter of recommendation with genuine anecdotes and examples of a student’s behavior in class.

2. More hard data

With this increase in applications, universities are looking for anything that can help them differentiate between students. Universities are looking to use as much hard data as possible to eliminate the workload of reading through essays and letters of recommendation. This means quantitative factors like GPA are more important than ever. Furthermore, the “test optional” route has not been relevant since COVID, and more and more universities and colleges are looking at standardized tests as an added metric to categorize students. Public exams like the AP exams or GCSEs are also more valuable than ever as they can help provide another objective data point to universities as they are making admissions decisions.

3. Yield is king

With more applications than ever, universities are looking to protect their yield rate as much as possible. Universities want to have the number of enrolled students match their accepted students as much as possible. This means universities are actively protecting the number of acceptances they are giving out to ensure their yield remains high. This year, over 50% of all admitted students in the Ivy League applied through Early Decision. This trend has been reflected in all the top universities and colleges as more and more universities are accepting a higher percentage of students from the Early Decision round as opposed to the regular deadline.

4. Major actually matters

As a consequence of the above point, universities care more about fit than ever before. Universities want to see a genuine interest and a plan with regard to the chosen majors students apply to universities with. This means students should demonstrate genuine interest in their chosen field with relevant academic exploration, extracurricular activities, and, depending on circumstances, relevant work experience or academic research. While applying as an undeclared major is still possible, university admission officers would like to see students approach this route with the same purpose. Students who apply as an undeclared major should still have obvious interests and passions and should be able to identify and explain a few key areas of interest while making it clear that their decision to apply as an undeclared major is not a consequence of a lack of interests, but instead is a result of having a variety of genuine interests.
