The University of Hong Kong is the territory's oldest university and, for many families we work with, the anchor of a multi-region application plan — a world-class option an MTR ride from home. This guide explains how HKU admissions work for students on international curricula, what the numbers look like, and how Quantum Prep students have fared. It is part of our university guides series, alongside our annual Hong Kong University Offers data story.

HKU admissions guide for Hong Kong students

Our track record at HKU

HKU is consistently one of the most frequent destinations on our students' offer lists. The table below shows the offers our students reported in each recent admissions cycle, as published on our results page:

Admissions cycle HKU offers reported by our students
2025-2026 16
2024-2025 9
2023-2024 3
2022-2023 5
2020-2021 9
Total (recent cycles) 42

JUPAS, non-JUPAS and the international route

How you apply to HKU depends on your qualifications. Students sitting the HKDSE apply through JUPAS, the centralised local system. Students on international curricula — the IB Diploma, A-levels, or AP with a high school diploma — apply through HKU's own non-JUPAS (international) admissions scheme, with applications typically opening in the autumn and main-round deadlines falling around late autumn to early January. Competitive programmes interview, and offers for international-curriculum students are usually conditional on final results.

Score expectations vary sharply by programme. As a rule of thumb in recent years, IB applicants to the most selective programmes — medicine, law, dentistry, global business — have needed predictions in the high 30s to mid 40s, while many other programmes make offers in the low-to-mid 30s. Check the programme-specific requirements early: they drive which HL subjects you should take.

What HKU looks for

HKU admissions weigh academic results first, but the whole application matters: your personal statement, your predicted grades, and for many programmes an interview. For students holding offers abroad, HKU frequently serves as the high-quality local hedge in a wider list — our 2026 offers data shows how often HKU appears alongside UK and US offers in the same student's cycle.

Because non-JUPAS assessment is holistic within an academic frame, a coherent story helps: relevant HL subjects, a statement that explains why this programme, and evidence of genuine engagement beyond the classroom.

How we help HKU applicants

Our consultants plan HKU applications alongside UK, US and Canadian options — building the list, timing the deadlines and preparing interviews. Our IB tutors support the grades side, from HL subjects to the Extended Essay. Families weighing HKU against offers from the UK should read our UK/US acceptance guide for how the systems differ, and explore our university admission consulting for the full picture of how we work.
